The Annual Research Review 2015 of National Institute of Fundamental Studies, Kandy, Ministry of Science, and Technology & Research was held successfully at 3rd of March 2016 under the patronage of Hon.Susil Premajayantha, Minister of Science, Technology & Research, The Secretary of the Ministry of Science, Technology & Research, Mrs. R. Wijialudchumi, Vice Chancellor of University of Peradeniya, Prof. Kapila Dissanayaka & Dr. Prasad Katulanda, University of Colombo. The Main objective of this annual review was to assess the progress of research projects which were carried out during the year 2015. The Secretary of the ministry of Science, Technology & Research, Members of Board of Governors of NIFS , reviewers from outside institutes and universities were present for the event.

The workshop on "From chemical to Eco friendly agriculture" - Role of microbial biofertilizers was held successfully on 18th February 2016 at NIFS Colombo office with the presence of The Director, The Secretary, Prof. Gamini Senevirathne and Prof.S.A. Kulasooriya of the NIFS. The Guest speech was delivered by Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thero (MP).

The Certificate of Commendation was awarded to National Institute of Fundamental Studies at the annual NSF Awards Ceremony (held on 15th December 2015 at the BMICH) for growing the algae Spirulina to overcome malnutrition in children and pregnant and lactating mothers in villages in Sri Lanka with the collaboration of Major General (Retired) W J T K Fernando.

The General Research Committee Award (GRC) -2015 was presented to Prof. Lakshman Dissanayake at the opening ceremony of the Annual Sessions of SLAA Sheld at BMICH on 30th November 2015.

Researches at National Institute of Fundamental Studies won President’s Awards for their scientific publications for the year 2013, chaired by the His Excellency the President and the Hon. Minister of Science, Technology and Research, held on 18th November 2015.

The Cabinet Minister of Technology, Technical Education and Employment, Hon.Susil Premjayantha declared new four- story building at the National Institute of Fundamental Studies.

This new building complex contains laboratories and a library which was constructed at a cost of 176 million grants by the treasury. After opening of the new building, he delivered a speech regarding his aims of using local scientists to engage in research for the development of the country and he appreciated the research work carried out by the NIFS scientist so far.

Provincial Astronomical program 2015

Foundation of Astronomical Studies & Exploration (FASE) with collaboration of the, National Institute of Fundamental Studies (NIFS) and International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE) successfully conducted the first phase of Island wide science educational program known as “Provincial Astronomical program 2015” based on astronomy lessons in school science curriculum at Kirma Maha Vidyalaya, Hambanthota on 23rd of September 2015.

Being the only research institute which, by its Act, has the main objective of engaging in basic research, the National Institute of Fundamental Studies (NIFS) has been in the forefront of scientific research in Sri Lanka ever since its founding in 1989.

Collaborative and Consultation Division (CCD)

This Division is established to function as an instrument for collaborative research and to transfer scientific knowledge and technologies developed at the NIFS to the society at large.
