The Cabinet Minister of Technology, Technical Education and Employment, Hon.Susil Premjayantha declared new four- story building at the National Institute of Fundamental Studies.

This new building complex contains laboratories and a library which was constructed at a cost of 176 million grants by the treasury. After opening of the new building, he delivered a speech regarding his aims of using local scientists to engage in research for the development of the country and he appreciated the research work carried out by the NIFS scientist so far.

Provincial Astronomical program 2015

Foundation of Astronomical Studies & Exploration (FASE) with collaboration of the, National Institute of Fundamental Studies (NIFS) and International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE) successfully conducted the first phase of Island wide science educational program known as “Provincial Astronomical program 2015” based on astronomy lessons in school science curriculum at Kirma Maha Vidyalaya, Hambanthota on 23rd of September 2015.

An educational workshop for students was conducted by the Research Assistants of the NIFS

An educational workshop for students in Vidyartha Vidyalaya, Rajanganaya , Nochchiyagama was conducted by the research assistants of the NIFS spanning three days from the 1st to 3rd of August. The main objective of this workshop was to help students who sit for the GCE O/L examination in 2015 and 2016 to gain some extra knowledge and ignite interest in Mathematics, Science and English. more details »

Wining an Award for the Best Presentation

Mrs. J.M.K.W. Kumari, Research Assistant, Condensed Matter Physics research group supervised by Prof. M.A.K.L. Dissanayake , National Institute of Fundamental Studies has won the award for the Best Poster Presentation at the 5th International conference on Functional Materials and Devices (ICFMD 2015) at Malaysia on 4-6th August 2015organized by the Centre of Ionics, University of Malaya.

We are at the beginning of Climate Extremes!!

Work shop on Impact of Climate change on water, Food and Environment in Sri Lanka was held at National Institute of Fundamental Studies, Colombo office on 25- 26 June 2015. Prof. Niamal Gunawardene, University of Peradeniya, Mr.S.Premalal, Deputy Director of Meteorology Department, Prof. W.L Sumathipala and Prof. C.S de Silva, The Open University of Sri Lanka, Dr. H.Manthirithilake, Sri Lanka Development Initiative and Dr. Tanuja Ariyananda from Lanka Rainwater Harvesting Forum delivered special lectures on impacts of climate change on water resources, on agriculture, health and environment and impact on changing coastal zone water resources.
