All Island competition for grade 9 students on “Science Copies Nature's Secrets" has been organized by Science Education & Dissemination Unit of NIFS. Participants should identify various happenings in the environment through their mechanisms. Then observe how humans have used (imitated) those mechanisms (nature’s creations) in their daily life and in their mega scale developments. Finally send us information about 5 imitations by a report based on the specimen format.
Prizes and certificates will be awarded to 1,2,3 places. A special merit award will be awarded to the education zone which includes the highest number of schools which submitted reports. The school which submits the highest number of outstanding reports will also be awarded a special prize.

Competition on “Understanding World through Science” 2016 for students and teachers of central province has been organized by National Institute of Fundamental Studies and Central Province Education Department and UNESCO. Aim of this competition is to develop the curiosity and willingness on identification of scientific concepts & their applications among students and teachers.
The students of Grade 7 & 8 can participate for this competition. Students should identify the scientific concepts associated with the environmental phenomenon observe and should find one scientific concept associated with an environmental phenomenon each day, during a period of 20 days. Then student should write down the scientific concepts and the phenomenon respectively and send their creation consisting of 20 concepts & phenomenon to us.
The teachers can submit their creations under three groups in a manner which gives a clear understanding & desire on scientific concepts learned by students. i.e. Creation Group A – Poetic creations , Creation Group B – Simple games & Creation Group C – Short Videos - less than 5 minutes.

The Annual Research Review 2015 of National Institute of Fundamental Studies, Kandy, Ministry of Science, and Technology & Research was held successfully at 3rd of March 2016 under the patronage of Hon.Susil Premajayantha, Minister of Science, Technology & Research, The Secretary of the Ministry of Science, Technology & Research, Mrs. R. Wijialudchumi, Vice Chancellor of University of Peradeniya, Prof. Kapila Dissanayaka & Dr. Prasad Katulanda, University of Colombo. The Main objective of this annual review was to assess the progress of research projects which were carried out during the year 2015. The Secretary of the ministry of Science, Technology & Research, Members of Board of Governors of NIFS , reviewers from outside institutes and universities were present for the event.

The workshop on "From chemical to Eco friendly agriculture" - Role of microbial biofertilizers was held successfully on 18th February 2016 at NIFS Colombo office with the presence of The Director, The Secretary, Prof. Gamini Senevirathne and Prof.S.A. Kulasooriya of the NIFS. The Guest speech was delivered by Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thero (MP).
The Certificate of Commendation was awarded to National Institute of Fundamental Studies at the annual NSF Awards Ceremony (held on 15th December 2015 at the BMICH) for growing the algae Spirulina to overcome malnutrition in children and pregnant and lactating mothers in villages in Sri Lanka with the collaboration of Major General (Retired) W J T K Fernando.
The General Research Committee Award (GRC) -2015 was presented to Prof. Lakshman Dissanayake at the opening ceremony of the Annual Sessions of SLAA Sheld at BMICH on 30th November 2015.
