Project Description

The Chemical and Environmental Systems Modeling Research Group works on understanding chemical processes in solid solution interface, assess, characterize, monitor water and soil pollution, salt water intrusion and model the systems in order to find solutions for human benefit.

Collaborative research projects
  • Biochar for the remediation of antibiotics from soil and waste waters: A research collaboration with the Kangwon National University, Korea (ongoing).
  • SATREPS (Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development): UoP, Saitama University, UoR – JICA – JST grant for 5 years on Waste Dumping Sites in Sri Lanka (ongoing).
  • Indo-Sri Lanka Bi Lateral Research Project on tea residue biochar on pesticide remediation in water and soil for 3 years (ongoing).

Achievements of the project in 2012-2013
  • Dr. M. Vithanage and Mr. S.S.R.M.D.H.R. Wijesekara participated the International Conference on Solid Waste Management, Hong Kong, 5-10 May, 2013.
  • Dr. Vithanage was elected as a member of the Committee for International Participation of the American Geophysical Union (2010-2012)
  • Dr. M. Vithanage conducted an invited lecture and organized the Biochar Workshop together with Prof. Yoshiyuki Shinogi, Department of Agro-environmental Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture, Kyushu University, Japan at the International Conference on Solid Waste Management, Hong Kong, 5-10 May, 2013.
  • Dr. Vithanage was invited for a talk at the First International Conference on Emerging Technologies for Clean Water. IIT-Madras, 14-16 September, 2012
  • Dr. M. Vithanage was selected as a Young Affiliate of the Third World Academy of Sciences for the period of 2012-2017 at the 12th General Conference of the Third World Academy of Sciences, Tianjin, China, 18-21 September, 2012.
  • Dr. Meththika Vithanage was selected to serve a speech at the American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting held at San Francisco in December, 2009.
  • S.S.R.M.D.H.R. Wijesekara attended two international conferences in India (First International Conference on Emerging Technologies for Clean Water-IIT, Madras) and Indonesia (7th Asia Pacific Landfill Symposium) and presented his research findings in 2012.
  • Dr. Meththika Vithanage Received 2009 Natural Hazards Focus Group Award for Graduate Research from the American Geophysical Union.
  • Dr. M. Vithanage was invited for a talk in the First International Conference on Emerging Technologies for Clean Water. IIT-Madras, 14-16 September, 2012.
  • Dr. M. Vithanage was elected as a member of the council of the Sri Lanka Academy of Young Scientists (SLAYS) in 2012.
  • Dr. M. Vithanage was awarded for the supervision of MPhil students (SUSRED), 2012 - National Science Foundation, Sri Lanka.
  • Dr. M. Vithanage was awarded for the supervision of MPhil students (SUSRED), 2011 - National Science Foundation, Sri Lanka.
  • Mr. S.S.R.M.D.H.R. Wijesekara obtained his MPhil Degree in Environmental Science from Post Graduate Institute of Science, University of Peradeniya in 2013.
  • Ms. R.M.A.U. Rajapaksha obtained her MPhil Degree in Chemical Sciences from Post Graduate Institute of Science, University of Peradeniya in 2012
